Whilst Brazil has a modern healthcare system, its quality and delivery can be variable, so it is advisable to take some sensible precautions.

If you are travelling to Brazil it is highly recommended that you get comprehensive insurance that includes medical cover. If you are spending a significant amount of time in the country it may be also worthwhile obtaining a private medical insurance policy.

Brazil is a tropical country and therefore presents a malaria risk, particularly in the north where the climate favours the mosquito population. It is common sense in these areas to use mosquito repellent lotions and sprays as well as mosquito nets and screens.

Before you travel you should consult your local doctor to ascertain which vaccinations are appropriate. Hepatitis A and B, Yellow Fever and Rabies are all potentially recommended depending upon where you intend travelling amongst other factors. Your GP will also advise you if you need boosters for standard vaccines such as MMR, chicken pox etc.

The local water supply is chemically processed and is considered safe to drink in most areas. The quality may fall somewhat in more remote areas and the standard of drinking water here may not be up to European standards, therefore it is advisable to take plenty of bottled water to drink.

Should you be unfortunate enough to require any medical services whilst in Brazil, rest assured that the healthcare system is generally deemed to be of a good quality. Brazil’s major urban centres in particular have a good reputation for treatment.

Brazil operates a social security system not dissimilar that of most EU countries where residents contribute to a national insurance fund allowing them access to healthcare, free at the point of delivery. As the country’s economy continues to grow and general affluence increases, private medical insurance has become more popular. BUPA, for example, operate a private healthcare scheme in Brazil and anyone intending to reside there is advised to consider a private policy.
